2 KVA or 4 KVA solar kit: which one to choose in Cameroon?

When you start looking into solar energy for your home or office, the first question is often: 2 KVA or 4 KVA? It’s a question of power, needs, and budget. Here’s a simple explanation to help you choose wisely.

What does “KVA” mean in a solar kit?

KVA (kilovolt-ampere) indicates the maximum power that the kit’s inverter can deliver at the same time. In practice, 1 KVA corresponds to roughly 800 watts of actual consumption.

  • A 2 KVA kit can simultaneously power up to ~1,600 W of appliances.
  • A 4 KVA kit can simultaneously power up to ~3,200 W of appliances.

But power alone doesn’t tell the whole story. The battery capacity (in kWh) determines how long you can run without sunlight, and the number of panels determines how quickly the battery recharges.

What each kit can actually power

2 KVA kit — for household essentials

The JP Solaire 2 KVA kit includes 2 solar panels of 580W, 2 lithium batteries of 2.56 kWh, and a 2 KVA inverter.

What it can power simultaneously:

  • 15 LED bulbs of 10W
  • 2 fans of 45W
  • 1 television of 80W
  • 1 laptop (4 hours of use)
  • Phone charging

This kit is right for you if: you want to power lighting in several rooms, fans, the TV and mobile devices, without a refrigerator or air conditioning. It’s the ideal solution for a flat or small house that wants to reduce its dependence on the ENEO grid.

4 KVA kit — for households with more appliances

The JP Solaire 4 KVA kit steps up to 6 solar panels of 580W and a 5.12 kWh lithium battery (10.24 kWh with 2 batteries).

With 2 batteries, it can power:

  • 20 LED bulbs of 10W
  • 2 fans
  • 1 television
  • 1 refrigerator of 150W
  • 1 freezer of 200W
  • Ironing for 1 hour during the day

This kit is right for you if: you need to keep food cold even during extended outages, and power a standard household with refrigerator and freezer. It is also suitable for small businesses (grocery store, shop, office).

3 good reasons to choose the 4 KVA

  1. You have a refrigerator or freezer. These are continuous-consumption appliances that require more power and storage. The 2 KVA cannot support them sustainably.
  2. Your household has more than 3 people. With more devices plugged in simultaneously, the 4 KVA gives you the headroom you need.
  3. You plan to expand. The 4 KVA can accept a second battery and is easier to scale up with additional panels.

2 good reasons to stick with the 2 KVA

  1. Your budget is tighter. The 2 KVA still covers the essentials very well (lights, fan, TV, phones). It’s better than a generator and has no fuel costs.
  2. You’re renting or don’t have space for 6 panels. The 2 KVA only requires 2 panels, which is easier to install on a small balcony or rooftop.

What about air conditioning?

A standard 1.5 HP air conditioner consumes between 1,200 and 1,500W at startup. Neither the 2 KVA nor the 4 KVA are designed to power it continuously. For air conditioning, you’ll need at least a 6 KVA kit or an 8 KVA kit. Read our guide on which solar kit to choose for a refrigerator and air conditioner for more details.
